The five host cities of the major WTF events were announced during the Extraordinary WTF Council meeting that was held at the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok in Thailand on March 7, 2017.


In detail the 2018 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships and the World Taekwondo Grand-Prix Series 2 will be held in Taipei, Chinese Taipei on November 15-18 and on September 20-22 respectively. The Egyptian resort city of Sharm El Sheikh will host the 2017 World Taekwondo Cadet Championships on August 23-27, while in Moscow, Russia the 2017 World Taekwondo Grand-Prix Series 1 will be held during August 4-6. Finally, the 2017 World Taekwondo Grand-Prix Series 2 was delegated to the Moroccan city of Marrakech on September 22-24.


During the summit, the Taekwondo Family welcomed French Guiana, the 208th Member National Association of World Taekwondo and WTF also announced that the new logo will be revealed at the WTF World Taekwondo Championships 2017 in Muju, Korea.


Among various issues discussed were the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), the Taekwondo Cares program and a 4-year strategic plan with Tokyo 2020 as its peak. Ten Progress reports, including the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) & the World Taekwondo Cares Program, the 2020 Olympic event modification, and the WTF’s 4-year Strategic Plan 2021, were presented to Council members.


Dr. Nat Indrapana, the International Olympic Committee member of Thailand and Mr. Pimol Srivikorn, President of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, were offered an appreciation award in recognition of their dedication and support for taekwondo.


ETU President Sakis Pragalos and ETU Secretary General Michail Fysentzidis met the Dr. Indrapana and discuss the positioning of taekwondo in an international level and its development perspectives and prospectives.


ETU Secretary General Michael Fysentzidis received Dr. Choue’s congratulations on being elected President of the International Olympic Academy. Also, with his inaugural identity of the IOA President, he had the chance to augment the educational mindset of Taekwondo through synergies of integration.


ETU President Sakis Pragalos welcomed the new MNA of the World Taekwondo and noted that it is very important to set contingent steps of development. “Sometimes timelines are tight. Though, it is important to look ahead, know our tasks and exceed expectations, as Russia will do, after been selected to host in its capital one of the major WTF events of the year”, he stated and added that ETU will support all initiatives and efforts towards the evolution of the sport and taekwondo events.


Following the WTF Extraordinary Council Meeting, the European MNA’s will conduct their summit in the ETU Council Meeting, which will be realized in Sofia, Bulgaria just before the ETU European Taekwondo Under21 Championships on 5 April 2017.
