Under the spirit of Olympism and solidarity, Taekwondo players from both sides of the Korean peninsula represented World Taekwondo (WT) and the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) in order to conduct a joint activity.


More specifically, the Taekwondo representatives performed together a collaborative demonstration at the pre-show of the Opening Ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.


On that topic, the message of peace and harmony was sent worldwilde with athletes from the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea parading out together behind one flag.


The World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue stated: “Today is a historic moment for World Taekwondo and the International Taekwondo Federation and the Korean Peninsula. At a time of growing global tensions, the joint performance of the WT and ITF demonstration teams in PyeongChang and the subsequent march of the Unified Korean Olympic Team at the PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony sent out a strong message that sport has the power to bring countries together and open up dialogue.”


The inside story


In August 2014, the two parties ITF and WT signed a Protocol of Accord with the full endorsement of IOC President Thomas Bach on the side-lines of the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.


Consequently, during the 2015 WT World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia and the 2017 WT World Taekwondo Championships in Muju, South Korea, the ITF Demonstration Team joined the WT corresponding one in order to perform together.


The day after


The WT and ITF Demonstration Teams met again for second day in a row (10/02/2018), in the coastal city of Sokcho in Gangwon province for a joint performance which lasted over an hour and included WT demo, ITF demo and a joint demo for conclusion.


The ceremony, which was held at Gangwon Career Center, was honoured by the presence of VIPs from the Olympic Movement including H.E. Mr. Ki-moon Ban, IOC Ethics Commission Chairman and Dr. Ugur Erdener, IOC Vice President, Mr. Francesco Ricci Bitti, ASOIF President, Mr. Ivan Dibos, IOC Member, Ms. Aicha Garad Ali, IOC Member, Prof. Ung Chang, IOC Member, Mr. Poul-Erik HØYER, IOC Member, Mr. Jean-Christophe Rolland, IOC Member. Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President, International Handball Federation, Mr. Oleg Matytsin, FISU President, Mr. Angelo Cito, WT Council Member.


The event was also honoured by the World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue and WT Secretary General Hoss Rafaty, the ITF President Yong Son Ri and ITF Vice President Hoyong Hwang.


The completion of the remarkable ceremony reserved a banner with the meaningful message of “Peace is more important than triumph”.
