Rome hosted the first World Taekwondo Grand Prix of 2018 during the dates 01-03 June, where the world’s top taekwondo players gave their presence and thrilling performances in order to claim the Grand Prix Champion title.


A total of 255 male and female athletes representing 51 different countries competed across eight different weight categories in the multi-purpose sports complex, Foro Italico.


The European representatives triumphed once again in the medal standings, as they achieved 56% of the total medals given during the event.


The weight category that stands out is the M-80kg where the winners’ podium was conquered by Maksim Khramtcov of Russia, Raul Martinez Garcia of Spain, the Croatian Toni Kanaet and Julio Ferreira (POR).


Continuing, the double Olympic Champion Jade Jones led her category in one more event as she won the gold in -57kg category and celebrated her medal on the podium among with Marta Calvo Gomez (ESP) and Tatiana Kudashova (RUS).




The success sustained in W+67kg category with the latest European Champion Aleksandra Kowalczuk (POL) to win the first place, followed by Milica Mandic (SRB) and Bianca Walkden (GBR) who achieved silver and bronze respectively.


The female accomplishments continued with the silver Magda Wiet Henin (FRA) and bronzes Lauren Williams (GBR) and Zeliha Agris (TUR).


Europe distinguished another two golds by the top Russian representatives Vladislav Larin and  Mikhail Artamonov, silver by Alexey Denisenko and two bronzes of Bradly Sinden (GBR) and Jack Woolley of Ireland.


Thus, Rome saw European taekwondo remaining strong competitor as a continent in a worldwide event and continued the tradition of achieving more than half of the total medals.    


Grand Prix series 2, 3, and 4 will be held in Moscow, Russia on August 10-12, Manchester, United Kingdom on October 19-21, and Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei on September 19-21 respectively. The Grand Prix Final and Team Championships will be held in Fujairah, UAE on 22-25 November.
