Lausanne, Geneva, and Vienna will be at the center of the taekwondo world in April when the World Taekwondo (WT) and the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) showcase their sport with joint demonstration performances. The events will be held under the name of ‘One World, One Taekwondo,’ and mark the 25th anniversary of since taekwondo was included in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games programme. They were proposed by WT President Chungwon Choue and agreed by ITF President Yong Son Ri at the end of 2018.
The ITF headquarters in Vienna will host the first event on 5 April and the second will take place at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Museum in Lausanne on 11 April with IOC President Thomas Bach in attendance. The final demonstration will be held outside the United Nations offices in Geneva on 12 April.
The April events are the latest in a series of joint sport diplomacy initiatives between WT and ITF. The ITF was founded first, in 1968, but it is WT, which was founded in 1973, that is recognized as the international ruling body by the IOC. In 2014, under the guidance of the IOC, the two federations signed a Protocol of Accord during the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games and since then have successfully planned joint taekwondo events on multiple occasions, most notably before the start of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
